Things to do in the Lakes of Cumbria
Among the things to do in the Lakes, limitless isolation cannot be done by going through some hotels in Cumbria. You need to visit the Dove Cottage, the former home of William Wordsworth. The former inn and pub, which turned to a family home, can be toured before heading towards the neighboring museum that has almost all of Wordsworth’s manuscripts. Take a short walk later on through Grasmere to St. Oswald’s 14th century churchyard.
A few miles farther, John Ruskin designed and built his estate. He was a famous Victorian writer, poet, artist and an art critic. You can see the parlor of his estate, Brantwood where he must definitely have entertained many acquaintances and friends with music and reading. You can also see his bedroom where his preferred J.M.W. Turner paintings from his collection used to hang.
Possibly the principal literary importance is witnessing the place Hill Top where Beatrix Potter conveyed to life her several adorable characters through her stories and illustrations. A lot of her characters were based at this farmhouse, which fortunately is still kept the same way as she left it.
And if you start to feel enthused by the country around you, you have her to thank. Beatrix Potter turned into a Herwick sheep farmer and a respectable one too. She is also responsible for the preservation of the Lake District as she donated her pastureland to the National Trust.
For more Lake District attractions, there is plenty of chance for country walks. The views spectacular but depend on the mist.
